FAIRFIELD — Police recovered a stolen minivan around 1 a.m. on Monday and took the driver into custody.

An officer on patrol on Commerce Drive saw three men in the minivan and, because a minivan was used in a recent string of ATM thefts, began to follow the vehicle. When he ran the plate, the officer discovered it was stolen and followed the van into the Cumberland Farms parking lot on Kings Highway. The van, a 1999 Toyota Sienna, was reported stolen the previous night from a Stamford street.

The passengers were released at the scene and the driver, Tommie T. Roberts, 20, of Washington Boulevard, Stamford, was charged with third-degree larceny. He was released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on Tuesday.

Police said there are no indications the three were involved in the ATM thefts.
