Rodney R. Merwin, 89, of Fairfield, died May 16, 2010, at the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital.

Born in Fairfield, the seventh child of the late George H. and Elsie Brown Merwin, he was a lifelong town resident.

He was a member for more than 50 years of the Greenfield Hill Grange and a member for many years of the Fairfield Historical Society (today called the Fairfield Museum and History Center), where he was publicly recognized for his verbal contributions on the history of Fairfield.

Merwin enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors with their gardening and yard work. He delighted in time spent attending fairs, especially the Big E, which he attended yearly since his early childhood.

He will be fondly remembered for his frequent bike rides and walks through Fairfield center during which he engaged in conversation with friends and merchants.

Merwin was predeceased by his siblings.

A graveside service will take place Wednesday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield.
