She was predeceased by her father, Michael, and her mother, Louise Bassaline.
She is survived by her brother, Peter; her nephews, Peter and Paul; her husband, Robert; as well as eight step-children, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Gaffney was a 1945 graduate of Staples High School in Westport, Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She received a bachelor's of science degree in nursing from the University of Bridgeport in 1963. She was employed by Bridgeport Hospital as an emergency nurse, surgical supervisor and assistant director of nursing. She worked closely with the organization of the original cardiac unit in the hospital.
Gaffney worked briefly in the Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and studied at Columbia University for her master's degree. She was a member of the Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary and the Hospital Alumni Association.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield; entombment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery Mausoleum, Westport. Friends may call Tuesday, June 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
