The turkey leftovers from Thanksgiving Day will barely be cool, but Christmas season in Fairfield warms up this weekend.

Santa Claus is coming to town -- as he always does on the Saturday after Turkey Day -- to greet local fans at Sherman Green.

Organized by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, Santa's visit transforms the downtown green into a festival heralding the magical season for young and old from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sherman Green is at Post and Reef roads.

The Man in Red arrives in style on a Fire Department ladder truck, and will be available to chat with youngsters and hear their holiday wish lists at the green's gazebo.

There also will be horse-and-buggy rides, a petting zoo and other attractions.

Meanwhile, all around Sherman Green, local community organizations, service groups and charities will offer holiday-appropriate wares to support their favorite causes.

Among the groups represented on Sherman Green will be the Junior League of Eastern County, which will be collecting used children's books for at-risk children. The group plans to set up a table where kids can make their own bookmarks and holiday ornaments to take home or give as gifts.
