Fairfield Public Schools' music department recently received the 2012 Award of Excellence in Arts Education from the Connecticut Arts Administrators Association.

The award is presented annually to member districts that are models for arts education, according to a release.

"We are proud of the high quality of our music program," Superintendent of Schools David Title said in a statement. "This recognition from a group of peers is a reflection of the commitment to music in Fairfield by students, teachers, administrators, parents and the community."

Winning districts provide a wide variety of course offerings for students and contribute and participate in state-wide initiatives and organizations, the release states. They also make major contributions to the culture of their schools and communities and provide measurements of student success through a variety of quality measurements.

Title and Donna Schmardel, music curriculum coordinator, were given the award at the association's recent arts advocates luncheon in Stratford.
