FAIRFIELD — As of Monday, the Fairfield recreational shellfish beds are closed due to a sewage main break.

A private contractor hit a “force main” on Pequot Avenue this morning, according to Department of Public Works Director Joe Michelangelo.

“Our sewer lines were marked out with paint on the road, the contractor obtained a proper permit, and all the information was provided to him,” said Michelaneglo. “For some reason, the operator of the excavator bucket somehow went deeper than it had to and struck a pressure sewer main. We make the contractors be bonded and insured for this reason, and we will make sure we recoup all of our expenses.”

There is no indication on when the beds will reopen.
