Shovel they must: Property owners threatened with fines after failing to clear sidewalks
As a fresh blanket of snow enveloped Fairfield on Monday, officials issued a reminder -- underscored by timely enforcement warnings -- about the town ordinance that requires property owners to clear public sidewalks.
Several Black Rock Turnpike and Rackozy Avenue residents can vouch for the enforcement edict after they were threatened with fines last Friday.
The issue arose after a Black Rock Turnpike resident called police to report that her 15-year-old daughter was forced to walk in the street to her bus stop because some homeowners along the route failed to clear their sidewalks after last Monday's snowstorm.
Police informed the four residents that a town ordinance requires sidewalks to be cleared of snow within 24 hours after a storm. Violators can face a $99 fine.
After being warned, police said all the property owners cleared their sidewalks.
