Sobering start to 2011: A Southpory Harbor plunge for a cause
2011 started on a chilling note in the Southport section of town Saturday morning.
While a lot of people were shaking off the grogginess of their New Year's Eve revels, a group of hardy -- even foolhardy, a few might say -- souls took the plunge into the icy waters of Southport Harbor.
It was, however, not the last gasp of a night-long celebration. It was, in fact, a cold-sober fundraising effort to fight epidermolysis bullosa, a rare disease that attacks the body's skin and mucus membranes, causing blistering and pain that may result in significant disabilities.
So after collecting pledges of support for a Cincinnati hospital, one of the few centers that treats children afflicted with the condition, the group stripped down and stepped out into the frigid harbor waters at the town's Ye Yacht Yard.
