A less hectic alternative to the head-long rush marking the start of the holiday shopping season is offered by the Pequot Library at its annual Black Friday/Saturday Book Sale.

The sale will take place Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and proceeds support the library's programs. The library is at 720 Pequot Ave.

There will be more than 5,000 books on offer, covering a wide range of interests.

This year's sale also includes thousands of brand-new items, including new CDs and DVDs.

For American culture or advertising enthusiasts, there will be an assortment of The New Yorker magazines from the 1940s-70s.

The Black Friday/Saturday Book Sale is a smaller version the Pequot Library's Summer Book Sale, which is known as one of the biggest in New England.
