Kimberly M. Canzoneri, a senior at Fairfield Warde High School, has received a $2,500 scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship Corp.'s National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Her probable career field is English literature, according to a news release.

Canzoneri is among approximately 800 African-American high school seniors who have won Achievement Scholarship awards through the program, a privately financed academic contest founded in 1964 to honor scholastically talented African-American youth.

It was also established to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition.

The awards, totaling more than $2 million, are financed by grants from 34 corporate organizations and professional associations and by National Merit Scholarship Corp., a nonprofit organization.
