With proud parents, friends, teachers and administrators looking on, 21 students were presented with the 2010 Superintendent's Awards prior to Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Superintendent of Schools Ann Clark said criteria for being honored included not only academic achievement and leadership in the school community, but also being the kind of person who puts "being nice into action."

She gave brief bios of every student honored and some couldn't help but smile as she rattled off all of the things they're involved in.

One honoree, for instance, was Roger Ludlowe Middle School student Mark Malone, who with his brothers made care packages for troops in Afghanistan for the holidays.

Another was Fairfield Warde High School student Adam Shur, who with his brother Daniel, as well as Gary Oster, co-founded H2Africa. The group's first project is to help solve the water crisis in Africa by installing a PlayPump in a village. One PlayPump costs $14,000 and provides 2,500 people with clean drinking water. Nestle Corp., impressed by the high school students' efforts, agreed to match $7,000, cutting fund-raising efforts in half.

McKinley Elementary School student Isabella Miserocchi clearly knows no one accomplishes anything alone, and so she invited all of her teachers to be there with her when she received her award. Seven women of varying ages stood by her side as the youngster smiled broadly.

Clark had read the bios of each student flawlessly until she got about halfway down the list. But she broke into tears when she spoke about Roger Sherman Elementary School student Lily Didomenico, who donated her bone marrow to younger sister Grace.

Clark had said at the outset the students being honored are among the most impressive youngsters she has ever met. Students in grades five, eight and 12 (one from each high school house) were recognized.
