Three men were hospitalized Saturday afternoon after they struck a tree while off-roading in woods in the Southport section of town, according to firefighters.

The incident took place about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area off Westway Road between Interstate 95 and the Metro-North Railroad tracks, officials said.

Three of the four men in the pickup -- all Fairfield residents who were not immediately identified -- suffered serious injuries when the vehicle smashed into a tree. The truck had extensive front-end damage, firefighters said.

Engine Four, Ladder One and Car 3 were dispatched to the scene, and under direction of Lt. James Shiller, firefighters initially administered first-aid to the injured.

The three injured men then were transported to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
