Making a stop just in time for Christmas, Santa's helpers at the Fairfield Police Department on Monday delivered two large truckloads of toys to Bridgeport Hospital.

The donated toys were collected for children hospitalized during the holiday season over the last several weeks, with local drop-off sites at police headquarters and the offices of the Parks and Recreation Department and Town Clerk.

In addition to the toys for hospitalized children, toys also were donated to Newtown Kindness, a charity established in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in 2012. The organization tries to promote acts of kindness through education, sharing and recognition.

"There is plenty of sadness throughout the year and this is one time that the officers feel good about giving back to the community," police Lt. James Perez said of the toy-collection project.
