FAIRFIELD — Police are investigating a one-car accident Sunday night that took out the stairs of a Fairfield Beach Road home and sent the driver to the hospital.

Peter Jones, 25, from Summit, N.J., was taken to Bridgeport Hospital following the 10:30 p.m. accident. The Fairfield University student, who lives on Fairfield Beach Road, appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed when he went over a hump in the road and lost control of his pickup truck.

According to the report, Jones lost control of the truck and became airborne after hitting the hump and hit a parked car when his truck landed. The collision pushed the parked car into the support beam of a nearby garage.

The pickup continued on, hitting a bunch of rocks that took off the truck’s front wheels. The truck’s momentum carried it into the front of a house, taking out the stairway.

Jones told police he was coming from his house on Fairfield Beach Road when the accident happened. He complained of shoulder pain and may have broken his collarbone.

Police noted that shortly after the accident, the road was filled with students leaving Super Bowl parties.

The investigation will include securing warrants for Jones’ blood alcohol levels and the “black box” from the pickup truck in an attempt to determine the rate of speed.

There are several humps in Fairfield Beach Road that were installed decades ago as flood control measures.
