Vasicek will stay as Midland County undersheriff

By a 4-3 vote, the Midland County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday decided Mike Vasicek will continue as undersheriff for next year.

The vote came after Commissioner Richard Keenan wrote a letter to the board asking that funding for Vasicek’s position be withdrawn. Keenan has voiced the need for more patrol officers and has said the money could go toward that use.

Commissioners voting to keep Vasicek’s position funded were Mark Bone, Jim Leigeb, Rose Marie McQuaid and board Chairman Jim Bradley. The board’s Finance Committee last week made a proposal to discontinue funding for 2010, in large part to get discussion on the issue.

“This is not a vendetta against Mike Vasicek at all,” Keenan said. “This is budgetary.”

Bone said the issue “really gets into micromanagement” and said he trusted Sheriff Jerry Nielsen’s judgment that Vasicek is needed. Bone said he was concerned “lopping off” one of Nielsen’s legs during the process of transition to a new jail would not be the answer.
