Students at Holland Hill Elementary School hit the streets in big numbers Oct. 7, participating in International Walk/Bike to School Day.

The activity was promoted by the Holland Hill PTA as a way to underscore the health benefits of exercise “to get their hearts pumping and promote total wellness,” according to event organizers.

As a result of the event’s promotion, the PTA reported:

Five times more students rode their bikes to school than usual.

Students who typically ride the bus were escorted to a walking path to get more exercise as part of the observance.

The “Walk This Way” message was in evidence all around the Holland Hill property, with signs posted around the school, as well as with chalk murals on sidewalks and other student-created signs.

Other activities that day included a zumba class offered by the Health and Wellness Committee before classes on the front lawn, and the Green Committee promoted using water bottles instead of plastic cups when drinking water to hydrate.
