With the end of the school year fast approaching, the Fairfled YMCA is offering a free water-safety course for children.

The series of five classes are scheduled Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 20.

The Y said the course was appropriate for children from pre-school through high school. Each class will be 30 minutes; age groups and times are available on the Y's website or by calling the Y.

Preregistration is required, the Y said.

Classes will cover water safety is a variety of environments -- public pools, backyard pools, boats, beaches and water parks. The course will include classroom sessions and sessions in the Y's pool, Y officials said in a news release.

Information on what participants should bring to classes will be given at registration, the Y said.

An annual average of more than 4,100 drowning deaths were recorded in the U.S. between 1999 and 2010, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control. The highest incidence of drowning was among children ages 1 to 4.

Globally, downing is the third leading cause of accidental death, according to the World Health Organization, which said children under age five account for the highest percentage of deaths.
