Debicella wins GOP nomination in 4th District

Connecticut state Rep. Dan Debicella of Shelton has won a three-way race for the Republican nomination in the 4th congressional district, setting up a high-profile challenge to freshman U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

Debicella defeated former Bridgeport Republican Party chairman Rick Torres and Rob Merkle, a business recruiter who won a spot on the primary ballot with the help of the district's tea party activists.

Debicella is the son of a policeman and says he was the first in his family to be able to attend college full-time. He already has the support of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which named him one of the party's "Young Guns," challengers the party believes have a chance to defeat incumbent Democrats.

A spokesman for the Merkle campaign said that Rob Merkle has not conceded the race.
