The John Patrick Flanagan Foundation, a Southport charitable organization, announced that it has awarded a total of $28,500 in 2013 grants to six nonprofits that assist disadvantaged children and families.

They include:

Connecticut Audubon Society Center in Fairfield, $8,000 to allow Bridgeport children to participate in its JPFF Trailblazers Program;

United in Hope Scholarship Fund, $5,000 to fund a scholarship for graduating college-bound high school seniors who attend school in Fairfield or Westport and have lost a parent to cancer;

Commence College Counseling, $3,000 to help it develop a website providing Bridgeport students with information about applying for college and financial aid;

Wakeman Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in Bridgeport, $7,000 to help fund teen counselors who provide programming;

Caroline House in Bridgeport, $4,500, to fund a snack program for the children in its preschool program;

High School Scholarship Foundation of Fairfield, $1,000 to fund an annual scholarship to a college-bound, high-achieving student with an economic need at Fairfield Warde High School.

The foundation is named in memory of the late John Patrick Flanagan to fund programs serving children and families.
