SOUTHINGTON — A 22-year-old Hartford man was seriously injured after being ejected from a vehicle in a crash on Interstate 691 east Tuesday night, according to officials.

According to State Police, the accident happened around 8:25 a.m. near Exit 3 on eastbound I-691 on the Southington/Cheshire town line.

The accident summary said a 2011 Nissan Sentra driven by a Meriden woman was traveling in the right lane when it was struck in the rear by 2016 Ford Focus.

The impact caused the Focus to roll over.

Firefighters arrived at the scene minutes later.

The driver of the Focus - Ibrahim Elali, of George Street, in Hartford - was seriously injured. He was transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

The driver of the Nissan and a passenger inside the vehicle were not injured.

The state Department of Transportation said I-691 east was closed between Exit 4 and Exit 5 because of the overturned vehicle crash.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, eastbound I-691 at Exit 3 will be closed for abouit 40 minutes for a follow-up investigation of Tuesday’s rollover.
