Cops: Stamford man caught with 37 bags of crack cocaine
STAMFORD — Police say they caught a 57-year-old man with 37 bags of crack cocaine at an East Side motel.
Capt. Richard Conklin said the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad heard that Derek Mitchell was dealing drugs out of the Red Carpet Inn on Friday night.
After setting up surveillance at the hotel, long known to be a drug marketplace, officers watched as Mitchell walked up to the nearby McDonald’s and consummated a hand-to-hand drug deal, Conklin said.
On his way back to the motel, officers approached him. As the police were walking up to stop him, he allegedly threw down a bag containing 25 smaller bags of crack cocaine, which police retrieved.
After gaining consent to search his hotel room, police found another 12 bags of crack along with 5 grams of marijuana and $1,639 in cash, Conklin said.
Mitchell was charged with possession of narcotics, sale of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held in lieu of a $5,000 court-appearance bond.
