Police: Man, 22, killed as suspects tried to break into Waterbury apartment
WATERBURY — A man was fatally shot Thursday night when two suspects tried to force their way into an apartment, police said.
Police, fire units and medics were dispatched to the 90 block of Cherry Street shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday for a report of a man shot.
Responding officers found a 22-year-old man lying on the floor unresponsive inside the apartment with a gunshot wound to the chest, Lt. David Silverio said.
Police, firefighters and medics provided care to the victim, who was transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m., police said.
His identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Detectives and members of the Forensic Division’s Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate the deadly shooting.
Investigators learned that before the shooting, someone knocked on the door to the apartment, Silverio said.
There were “several” people in the apartment Thursday night, Silverio said. Someone opened the door slightly and saw two men outside the door.
“The male suspects tried to force their way in,” as the person who opened the door tried to close it with help from someone else in the apartment, Silverio said.
That’s when the two people trying to close the door called the victim over for help, Silverio said.
“A male suspect produced a handgun and fired multiple gunshots into the apartment while the door was still open,” Silverio said. “The victim was shot in the chest and fell to the floor.”
Those inside the apartment closed and secured the door as the suspects ran away.
The investigation is ongoing.
