On the Market: A typical facade hides secrets

NEW CANAAN — The 4,202-square-foot house at the end of a long driveway at 222 Marshall Ridge Road cannot be seen from the road because its positioning on a 1.69-acre largely level and sloped property affords it an immense amount of privacy.
Were this white clapboard house with black shutters visible to pedestrians and motorists, it would likely fool them all. From its outward appearance the house is a classic colonial as one would expect to find in New Canaan when it was first built in 1986. But inside it’s a different story. The front formal rooms still live like a traditional colonial while the back of the house is comfortably casual and suitable for daily living and lots of entertaining. All the first floor rooms have nine-foot ceilings.
When the house was remodeled and updated in 2011, it was given a great flow from room to room. It also received two doors in different rooms — the gourmet kitchen and the family room, that provide access to two bluestone patios on opposing ends of those rooms. That creates a large amount of entertainment space inside and out, or as one of the co-listing agents said “this is a great party house.”
The location of this house is convenient for commuters or for guests who visit by train. It’s only a mile from downtown and an easy walk to the train station. It’s also a short car ride from the Talmadge Hill station. Nature lovers, take note. Nearby is the 17-acre Bristow Bird Sanctuary, a public park on Old Stamford Road that, according to the town website, is “a quiet secluded spot to walk on wooded trails and enjoy nature.” Additionally, the New Canaan Trust has a wildlife sanctuary on Marshall Ridge Road.
As one travels down the long, recently repaved driveway — much of it lined in Belgium block, it’s clear this is a well-loved and maintained house. It is framed by attractive landscaping, most notably this time of year the blooming azalea bushes in vermilion, violet, and white. Azaleas, and other plantings, are found on the ridge behind the house, which augments the privacy of this setting. No fence could replicate the privacy created by this ridge, one agent said. A gate in the back fence on the ridge shortens the walk to the train.
The property contains many flowering trees including cherries, copper beech and many mature deciduous trees, and rhododendrons. The large open front lawn invites child’s play, games of croquet and soccer matches. One towering tree awaits an old tire swing.

A bluestone path leads to the covered and columned front entrance. The door is framed with sidelights and a fanlight transom. In the foyer the hardwood floor is arranged in a herringbone pattern and bordered with darker wood.
To the right is the formal living room with a fireplace and built-in bookshelves that were recently added. To the left of the foyer is the formal dining room. These front rooms are unified by dentil crown molding in the foyer and dining room and in the fireplace mantel. The foyer and dining room also have wainscoting on the lower walls. The living room has chair railing.
The living room opens into the spacious family room, which has a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with two alcoves for wood storage and a raised hearth topped with slate. At the back of the family room there is a wall of built-in bookshelves, cabinetry with a wet bar and beverage refrigerator, and a desk area that could be a home command center or homework station. The sliding doors that access one patio are topped with a transom. This room also has a random-width pegged hardwood floor.
