FAIRFIELD — American bald eagles have come back from the brink of extinction and they are visible more frequently flying in the skies above Connecticut. But it wasn’t the majestic bird, our national symbol that inspired the name of a street off Algonquin Road in the heart of the historic Brooklawn Park neighborhood.

More likely than not Eagle Drive was named after the golf term for scoring two under par. Eagle Drive sits across the street from the Brooklawn Golf Course, and the Brooklawn Country Club is just down the street. The colonial house at 10 Eagle Drive sits on the corner of Algonquin Road. This house was built in 1991 as a Munson model home, the original model for this Eagle Drive enclave of seven houses on a cul-de-sac. Its one and only owner has impeccably maintained this 8,654-square-foot house, 10-room house. The house has a well-designed floor plan that is timeless and functional, and many extra features throughout.

The pale yellow house with white trim is on a lot of almost half an acre. The Algonquin Road side of the property is bordered with a stone wall. The entrance into the driveway is marked by granite pillars topped with lanterns. The attractive landscaping along the front to the house includes hydrangeas, sea grasses, allium, astilbe, a Japanese maple, holly, and other shrubbery. The flagstone path to the covered, two-story, wrap-around front porch is lined in Belgium block. The porch has eight tall columns. The eaves of the mansard roof are lined with dentil molding.

Framing the front door are sidelights and an arched transom with leaded glass in a decorative pattern. The door itself is decorative with carved floral detailing and egg-shaped leaded glass window. The door opens to the foyer, which has a marble floor and a staircase with milled balusters and newel posts topped with large scale upside down wood acorns. Throughout the house the earth tone colors on the walls and some ceilings are ahead of the trends, which are moving away from monochromatic gray.

The crown molding is also decorative with an egg and dart design. That molding continues into the formal living room, which also features a gas log fireplace with a decorative molding and French doors to the porch. Columns mark the entrance of the living room from the foyer. In the formal dining room there is wide grass cloth on the upper walls, wainscoting on the lower walls, a tray ceiling, and the egg and dart molding. French doors access the same porch and a café door swings open into the butler’s pantry, where there is glass-front cabinetry and marble counter.

The large eat-in kitchen features a center island with a breakfast bar, granite counters, off-white ceramic subway tile backsplash, ceramic tile floor, and a Thermador four-burner range top. The eat-in area has a hardwood floor, bead board on the lower walls, and sliding doors to the wood deck and backyard. The spacious family room has a tall vaulted ceiling, a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with a raised hearth and wood mantel, a Palladium window, built-in shelving, and a dry bar area with glass-front cabinetry and counter space. It also has a door to the deck, which has built-in seating and steps to the patio from which there are views of the golf course.

In the hallway between the foyer and the kitchen there is a staircase that leads up to a bonus room. It has a window seat, full bath and closet, so it could be used as an au pair suite. It is currently used as an office. On the second floor there are four bedrooms. The master bedroom suite has two walk-in closets and wall-to-wall carpeting. The master bath has a jetted tub and a long double vanity with a built-on make-up area. There are two more bedrooms and a play area on the third floor. One of the rooms has a built-in desk area, shelving, cabinetry, window seat, skylights, and wall-to-wall carpeting.
