FAIRFIELD — Two architectural styles collide to create an unusual farmhouse in the north-westernmost section of Fairfield. The yellow Cape Cod colonial house combines the charm of the old with the personality and functionality of the new.

It is located on a picturesque two-acre level and sloping property at 1256 Catamount Road, a very rural part of town, which boasts several large equestrian properties. In fact, a 2011 Fairfield Citizen article claims this area of the Greenfield Hill neighborhood has more horses than children.

This property does not come with horse facilities but it does have a number of other attractive amenities that are ideal for day-to-day living, entertaining, and recreation including a kitchen renovated two years ago, spacious rooms with an open floor plan, two family rooms, and easy access to local hiking trails. The property, across the street from Wild Flower Lane, borders the municipally-owned wildlife conservation area Brett Woods Open Space, in effect expending this home’s two-acre wooded yard by 185 acres. One of the current homeowners joked that it is like owning a very large parcel of land without having a large tax bill for that amount of land and without the responsibility to maintain a property of that size.

An access path is located between this house and the next door neighbor’s property. That path leads into Brett Woods, which enjoys miles of hiking and bridle trails. However, there is no need for the inhabitants of this house to fear loss of their privacy. There are several access points into Brett Woods, but this path has no parking area associated with so it is used almost exclusively by residents in this immediate area.

After a long hike family members can sit and relax on the 44-foot-long covered front porch. The house sits on a bit of a hill set back from the road, where there is a fieldstone wall along the front of the property. From the ample driveway there is a bluestone path to the porch. Both are lined in Belgium block.

The original portion of the house was built in 1920 and later an addition was constructed. Renovations were also made over the years. Inside, there is 4,438 square feet of living space, most of which is on the main level. The first of two staircases to the second floor is found in the foyer. The other one is on the opposite end of the house between the kitchen and living room. In this end of the house there is a bedroom off the foyer, which is currently used as a music room, and access to the two-car attached garage. The living and dining rooms share the same large space, which has a wall of glass including French doors to the bluestone patio.

Then step up into another wing of the house, which contains the kitchen, one of the family rooms, and three more bedrooms. The eat-in kitchen has a hardwood floor, white quartzite counters, a peninsula with a breakfast bar, and stainless steel appliances. In one of the cabinets there is a built-in wine rack. There is also a door to the wood deck. Off the kitchen is the family room with the home’s original stone fireplace, which is flanked by built-in window seats and bookshelves. There are exposed beams in the coffered ceiling and a door to a front patio/balcony.
