FAIRFIELD — In October 1927 MGM Studios released a 20-minute silent movie titled “The Flag: A Story Inspired by the Tradition of Betsy Ross.” The film tells the story of George Washington, then-commander of the Revolutionary American forces, recommending a new flag to represent the 13 original colonies and his request of Betsy Ross to design and create that first flag, according to the film industry website www.imdb.com.

That same year a 2,792-square-foot colonial house was built 454 Toilsome Hill Road in the Stratfield neighborhood. The green house with white trim and shutters has Old Glory, in the form of a metal wall-hanging decoration, on display at its covered front entrance. To reach that entrance walk up the stone steps buttressed by fieldstone walls. Inside, this updated vintage colonial is brimming with personality, warmth and charm. The interior was recently painted in warm, neutral tones.

Despite the era in which this house was constructed it has an open, circular floor plan that so many perspective homeowners look for today. It has a spacious, front-to-back formal living room with a fireplace, built-in cabinetry and bookshelves with interior lighting, and a dry bar. The family room is also sizable. It has a decorative ceramic tile floor with radiant heat and a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams. Three walls of windows look over the private setting of the backyard, which has manicured gardens, terraced bluestone patios and original stone walls. The widows give those in the family room the sense that they are in a treehouse.

French doors with multiple glass panes separate it from the living room. Pocket doors close off the family room from a room that has flexible use. It sits between the family room and foyer. It’s ideal when entertaining because a buffet table can be set up in that room. Near the ceiling there is shelving that goes around the room for displays or storage of dishware, vases, teapots, or other culinary objects. This room is just off the kitchen, which also has a café door that leads into the formal dining room.

The eat-in kitchen features a ceramic tile floor, black granite counters, white ceramic tile backsplash with decorative tiles depicting different types of fruit, double stainless sinks, bead board on the lower walls, and an appliance “garage” for storage of a toaster and coffee-maker. High-end appliances include a Bosch glass-top range.

On the second floor there are four bedrooms. The master suite has a fireplace and its bath has bead board on the lower walls and a ceramic tile floor. One of the other bedrooms has a wall of built-in drawers, cabinets, bookshelves and desk area. In the walk-up attic there is a charming room that could serve as a fifth bedroom if necessary. It has the feel of being in a bed and breakfast so it might also be a suitable guest bedroom. It does have its own full bath with an old-fashioned claw-foot tub.

In the backyard, the level and sloping property of just over a third of an acre contains tall trees and a variety of perennial flowers including hydrangeas, butterfly bushes, hostas, astilbes, holly bushes and rhododendron shrubs.

This house is only 3.5 miles from the downtown train station and two miles from the municipally owned Lake Mohegan, which has a sandy beach for swimming, a playground, and extensive hiking trails. Lincoln Park, which also has playground equipment, is within easy walking distance.
