"Hillside" is the name given to one of the truly great estates in Fairfield County. This 7.6-acre gated property at 1514 Hillside Road, in the heart of Greenfield Hill, is the site of a French Manor-style Colonial house, two-bedroom guest house, detached home office building, new Gunite in-ground swimming pool and a botanical reflecting pool.

It also boasts one of the pre-eminent locations and views as well. The house was built in 1927 on the highest point of Greenfield Hill, with commanding water views of the distant Long Island Sound. The 7,894-square-foot main house was built by noted local architect Cameron Clark for Mr. and Mrs. Maynard S. Bird. It was inspired by the Birds' month-long honeymoon in France in 1925. Although the house has undergone extensive and meticulous renovations, many of the original Clark details remain intact.

"The site they chose was superb. Located on the highest point of Greenfield Hill it presented a breathtaking vista of Long Island Sound," Maynard Bird is quoted as saying in a biography about him titled "The Saga of a Maine Son."

The many elegant and ornate features of this house begin with the entrance to the property, which is marked by two tall stone pillars topped with sculptural vases of flowers, and a decorative wrought iron gate. The railing of the balcony over the front entrance to the house is also decorative wrought iron. Above the French doors to the balcony, on the front façade of the house, is an artistic motif and dentil molding. The continuity extends to the gracefully curved railing of the front staircase, which also features intricately-designed wrought iron.

The symmetrical house has two wings divided by the center hall, front-to-back entrance, which has fabric wall covering and French doors to the large bluestone terraced patio and rear yard. One wing houses the formal living room, family room, library, and sun room. The other contains the formal dining room, den, large butler's pantry, gourmet kitchen and an identical sun room.

Features in the library include a long wall of built-in bookshelves and lower cabinets, picture frame paneling on the walls with carved wood details and a carved marble fireplace.

The living room also has an ornately carved marble fireplace and picture-frame paneling. A set of French doors open to reveal thick glass shelving, which is an ideal bar and entertainment center.

This area of the house also has a secondary foyer accessed by the "side" entrance. It is smaller and less dramatic than the formal front entrance and it has French doors into a beautiful sun room, which has terra cotta tile flooring and two walls of multiple Palladian-style French doors to the attractive grounds.

On the opposite side of the center hall foyer there is a den with French cafe-style doors, a half bath and an alcove that creates a sitting area. One can envision this as a formal reception area for large-scale entertaining, a place to store guests' coats and allow them to freshen up.

The dining room features chair railing, another ornate fireplace and picture frame paneling. The butler's pantry is as large as the dining room in many other houses. It has long wood counters, stainless sink, glass-front cabinets, numerous built-in drawers and cabinets, and beverage refrigerator.
