In the heart of Greenfield Hill there is a 6 and a half acre estate with a custom-built Colonial manor house that looks like it belongs in France's Normandy region. The white brick house with its striking mansard roof sits at 680 Old Academy Road, easy walking distance from Timothy Dwight Park and Greenfield Hill Congregational Church.

This is one of the largest parcels of residential land in town. The portion of the property on which the house and heated in-ground Gunite swimming pool are located is level. The rest of the property slopes resembling a European hillside. Its next owners can enjoy the local surroundings and privacy while also enjoying its convenient location. This property is only 2.6 miles from the Merritt Parkway, 3.1 miles from the downtown Fairfield train station and 3.5 miles from Interstate 95.

The main house was built in 1981 and has 5,993 square feet of living space. There is another 2,400 square feet in the guest cottage, which was constructed in 2003. It has mahogany floors, one full and one half baths, and like the main house, plenty of storage. There is also plenty of space for vehicles. The attached, under house garage has three bays and the cottage has a four-car garage.

Stone pillars mark the entrance to the estate and the long circular driveway, lined in Belgian block, leads to the front entrance which comprises a staircase of an unusual, honed coral-colored stone befitting this unusual house.

The main house could use updating -- for example, the kitchen has a linoleum floor and Formica counters. But any renovation project should be respectful of the current -- and original -- owner's intent. It would be a shame to lose some of its unique details, which distinguish this house from today's construction. The flowing floor plan is perfectly suited to today's lifestyle. The rooms are spacious and richly appointed starting with the entrance foyer.

French doors provide a wide entrance into the dramatic two-story foyer with a Calacatta Gold marble floor, crystal chandelier and custom curved staircase.

The formal living and dining rooms have sea grass wall covering and intricately designed oak parquet flooring. The office has a parquet floor, too, this one in a herringbone pattern. The office also features a wall of ornate built-in drawers and shelving with doors, faux suede wall covering, chair railing and picture frame paneling.

The dining room has a wall of built-in china cabinets hidden behind doors with decorative molding. A large dry bar and butler's pantry sit between the dining and living rooms, perfect for entertaining. In the living room there is a barrel-like ceiling with exposed beams, hand-carved marble fireplace, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors to one of two patios.

There are front and rear galleries in the house. The front one provides a grand entrance into the living room and it is a great place for displays of artwork.

The rear gallery provides access to a large sun room and family room. The sun room has wood paneled walls and ceiling, yellow brick fireplace and French doors to a flagstone patio. The family room also has a fireplace and sliding door to the backyard. Off the family room are the laundry room and a full bath, which has a door to the backyard and pool area so this part of the house can serve as a cabana.

The partially finished basement has a tall ceiling and is an ideal entertainment area. It has a billiards room, media center, fireplace, large dry bar and wine cellar/tasting room. There are front and rear stairs to the basement. It also has a great deal of storage including several closets hidden behind wood paneling. In fact, most people would envy the amount of closets and storage that this house has.

One of the four bedrooms on the second floor has a walk-in closet that doesn't seem to end. It has doors from one closet into another into yet another including a cedar closet. All four bedrooms are generously sized.

The master bedroom has wall-to-wall carpeting, large his and hers walk-in closets, and a bath that's as large as the bedroom itself. One section of the closet has a built-in vanity table with an onyx counter.

The cavernous bath could probably do without the dated silver metallic wallpaper, but the rest of it is well designed with a huge jetted tub, equally large walk-in shower, wall of beveled mirrors, marble counter on the double vanity and a bidet. There is an ideal spot in this bath to create a morning kitchen, which is a popular feature in new construction.

The partially finished third floor is roomy and could be a playroom or art studio.
