FAIRFIELD — Some people want the privacy of a neighborhood where surrounding houses are not visible. Others prefer the neighborly feel of a close-knit community where houses have less space between them.

A Colonial at 35 Southwood Road in the Stratfield section of town can offer a bit of both, plus the added benefit of proximity to commercial businesses, restaurants, commuter routes, the train stations and town amenities like the town's Fairfield Woods Branch Library. Stratfield Village contains several shops including pizza and Chinese casual dining spots, a bank, gas station and veterinary clinic.

Several recreational facilities are also nearby. This neighborhood is sandwiched between the Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course to the north and Brooklawn Country Club and Golf Course to the south. Also close by are Lt. Owen Fish Park and Lake Mohegan, the latter of which is a 170-acre town-administered open space area with hiking trails and a fresh water lake for swimming.

Then there are the leisure-time pursuits residents can enjoy in their own backyard. Although many properties in this area have rather small backyards, the lot at 35 Southwood has more than a half-acre. The lot's configuration coupled with the rear perimeter of mature trees provides a private setting.

Built in 1948, the house looks more like a ranch-style structure at first glance, but it does have a second floor. There is 2,360 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms, a recently updated kitchen, large three-season sunroom and a good-size brick terraced patio.

One section of the yard is enclosed with chain-link fencing, which could be an enclosed play area for young children or for pets.

The house is set well back from the road. A long, slate path leads to the covered front entrance of the beige wood clapboard and stone house with taupe shutters.

Both the living and dining rooms have crown molding and wall-to-wall carpeting. The living room has a bay window and a fireplace. The dining room has chair railing and a decorative wall covering on the lower portion of the walls depicting potted houseplants. It also has a door to a large screened sunroom. A pocket door separates the dining room and kitchen.

The kitchen features granite counters, cherry cabinets, tumbled marble backsplash, a small center island, eat-in area, double stainless steel sinks and professional grade appliances including commercial-sized side-by-side Kenmore Elite refrigerator and freezer, KitchenAid four-burner gas range and Bosch dishwasher. There is also a glass-paneled door to the deck, which has a decorative wood and wrought iron railing around it. The deck is bordered by mature rhododendron shrubs, and a brick path runs along the back of the house from the deck to the sunroom.

Back in the living room, take two steps up to the separate master bedroom with its own bath and spacious closets, and then down the hall to a second bedroom with built-in shelving and lower cabinets. The finished attic has two more bedrooms.
