There are only treats in store this Halloween at a custom-built English Country Farmhouse at 1 Hubbell Lane in the Greenfield Hill neighborhood.

If a 200-page museum or auction house-quality catalogue existed detailing this property's amenities, it would not be sufficient to include everything worth mentioning.

That list includes a two-story library with hand-carved railings on its spiral staircase, thoughtful dining areas, large wine bar and a butler's pantry-like space for the hard liquor wet bar, crown molding in every room on every floor and two gourmet kitchens. Actually, three if one counts the kitchen in the 2,000-square-foot guest house, although that kitchen is considerably smaller, as one might imagine.

The design inside the 8,684-square-foot main house and the landscaping outside create a wealth of private spaces. Careful consideration was also given to the entertainment flow of the house and grounds. The design also accommodates intergenerational family living.

The house was conceptualized by owner Ronald Marshall, a professional interior designer who collaborated with his brother Bill Marshall, vice president of Artisans Home Builders, to create this impressive estate, which is both cosmopolitan and comfortable.

When it was built in 2008, the Marshalls excluded from the blueprints a living room, a deliberate choice that fits in with Ron Marshall's philosophy. He said no one spends time in a living room anyway, so it would be wasted space. Instead, they designed a large gourmet kitchen that opens to the family, or gathering, room that gives the residents and guests ample space to congregate.

One particularly unusual feature is the placement of three formal and casual dining spaces in a row. The formal dining room, which has an onyx fireplace, can be used alone for intimate dinners. For large holiday gatherings the dining room can be combined with the eat-in area of the kitchen and the separate breakfast room to create a large banquet space. The breakfast room has French doors to a bluestone patio and in-ground pool.

The family room has a 30-foot-tall, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, cathedral ceiling and wine bar with an olive green rainforest marble counter, glass shelving and beverage refrigerator.

Brazilian granite tops the kitchen counters and sizable center island. Appliances include a Wolf six-burner range and Thermador ovens.

A private wing houses the main-level master bedroom suite, which has a fireplace with a flat river rock surround, dressing room, walk-in closet, French doors to a sitting area and the library, and a door to a private covered bluestone patio. The master bath has a heated Travertine floor.

The second floor has three additional bedrooms, one en suite, and the others share a hall bath that features an onyx floor and counter. They also have doors to a shared balcony. All bedrooms have special reading lights.

A wide interior balcony that looks down into the family room is large enough for furniture to create a lounging area. Even the dormers have been put to good use creating small rooms, in one case a board-game room. Unique railings on the staircase and balcony were created by the homeowner.

The finished lower level has eight rooms including a kitchen with marble counters and center island and Wolf range, as well as a large prep kitchen, bedroom, family room, gym and an unfinished 5,000-bottle, climate-controlled wine cellar with a stone floor.

The private, attached guest house has a living room, dining room, family room with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and three bedrooms on the second floor. A first-floor full bath has a handicapped accessible shower.

The professional landscaping features specialty plantings that include pink and yellow magnolias, 500 daffodils, river birch trees, umbrella pines, winterberry shrubs, manicured hedges and dogwood trees.

The owner thought of everything. There is a trash room off the three-car attached garage of the main house, and both garages -- those of the main and guest houses -- are heated and have hot-and-cold running water. The guest house has an attached garage with one bay.

Marshall gave a subtle nod to the property's agricultural past by installing a hitching post between the main and guest houses.
