FAIRFIELD — The tan-colored Colonial with white trim at 287 South Benson Road was built in 1919, although it does not show its age. In 2006, the house was renovated, giving it an open floor plan, an updated eat-in kitchen, steam shower in the master bedroom suite, and other amenities typical of today’s lifestyle.

It probably wouldn’t be considered a beach house but it is in Fairfield’s beach neighborhood and it is located in a place that allows easy access to the town’s local beaches. Jennings Beach is a short walk away as is the Town Hall campus, the Fairfield Museum and History Center, the main branch of the Fairfield Public Library, downtown shops and restaurants, and the main train station.

Then again, if someone wants to work from home there is a large office that can be entered from within the home, but also has a separate exterior entrance.

This clapboard, shingle and wood house looks rather small from the street view, but actually has 4,390 square feet of living space — 2,822 of it on the main living levels and 1,568 in the partial basement, which is finished, heated and air conditioned, and includes a recreation or playroom. It has wood-paneled walls and ceiling and it is also a walk-out lower level that has a door to a stone patio with a stone sitting wall.

On and off street parking is available. The paved driveway is lined in Belgium block and leads to the one-car attached garage. From the front sidewalk is a path to the covered front porch and door flanked by sidelights that leads to the foyer, which is large enough to accommodate a piece of furniture. It has wainscoting on the lower walls.

Inside, the entire interior was recently painted in beach colors. Throughout most of the house there are hardwood floors. The living room has a fieldstone fireplace and chair railing. One wall of the family room has wainscoting. The kitchen features granite counters, a center island with a breakfast bar to accommodate three people, and stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher and icemaker. The cabinetry includes built-in bookshelves around the desk area, some glass-front cabinets and drawers. There is also a pantry and access to the mudroom.

Rounding out the first floor is a full bath, the first of three in the house.

On the second floor, the master suite has a vaulted ceiling, recessed paneling on the lower walls, and one wall with three windows side-by-side-by-side; the middle one with arched molding above it. It also has a spa-like bath and walk-in closet.

This house has three other bedrooms.

Prior to Tropical Storm Irene and Superstorm Sandy, this house was not included in the high-risk “AE” flood zone, however, as of July 8, 2013, the property was included in the revised flood zone mapping, which means flood insurance is required.

There will be an open house on Sunday, May 22, from 1 to 4 p.m.
