Not far from Southport Harbor is Penfield Reef Lighthouse on Long Island Sound, a beacon off the local shoreline since 1874.

Overlooking Southport Village and Harbor is a classic French manor house at 794 Sasco Hill Road that also serves as a lantern of sorts. The white-washed brick house was designed in the La Lanterne see-through style by Fairfield artist and MIT-trained architect Louis Conrad Rosenberg.

Throughout his career, Rosenberg designed only five houses, all but this one in the board and batten style. But even this house has a nod to that style. The back of the house features a bit of board and batten. Rosenberg designed the house using the ancient Greek rules of proportion and the Golden Ratio to create rooms that have a natural, comfortable feel and that flood each room with natural light in the La Lanterne tradition.

The stately 4,500-square-foot house was built circa 1937 on a 1.6-acre parcel with striking water views. Also within sight is the steeple of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport Village. A three-year restoration project was completed in 2004. The restoration took the structure down beyond the studs. The only original interior elements that remain are the front formal, curved staircase with iron balustrades in the marble entry foyer and the pine paneling in the library. The library also features a fireplace with a slate surround and concealed television compartment.

The house has numerous elegant and attractive architectural and artistic details. The hardwood floors on the first floor, except in the gourmet kitchen, are arranged in a herringbone pattern. The formal living room fireplace has an exquisite 19th century marble mantle and slate surround. There are one-of-a-kind, deep plaster cove moldings designed with a European flare.

The principal rooms are painted with decorative finishes, as well as stenciling in many first-floor rooms by Arthur Fowler and a mural in the formal dining room by Diane Voyentzie. Fowler's hand-cut damask stenciling in the living room is so well done that it gives the appearance of seamless fabric adorning the walls.

The kitchen is a work of art in itself. Jerusalem stone tops the counters and tumbled marble forms the backsplash. Fowler even painted the light plates to resemble the marble so they blend in to the backsplash.

The area with the farm sink has a teak counter. Also included in the kitchen are a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Sub-Zero freezer drawers, Professional Viking range with double ovens and six-burner gas cook-top and griddle, and two Miele dishwashers.

French doors lead to the herringbone-patterned brick terrace and flagstone terrace with a British Ha-Ha wall, which is described on the BBC website as a wall that "typically formed a boundary between the estate's gardens and grounds. These walls were constructed so as to be invisible from the house, ensuring a clear view across the estate." This red brick wall, however, does not obstruct the harbor view. It has a French fountain and is covered with white wisteria vines.

All the neighbors have an agreement that they will not allow trees to grow too tall so as not to impinge on the others' views of the water.
