3 keys to Fairfield Warde football
Warde 35, Wilton 21 (Oct. 18)
Consistent defense: Warde allowed an early score to Wilton, but composed itself and limited Warriors' athletic quarterback Brett Phillips to orchestrating only that one score in the first half. That helped the Mustangs assume a three-touchdown lead.
Balanced offense: The Mustangs threw 20 times for 206 yards and gained 198 yards from 37 carries. The balance pleased coach Duncan DellaVolpe. Warde scored twice by passing and once by rushing.
Strong play by linemen: The offensive line opened holes and protected the quarterback at pivotal times, particularly on third-down plays. The defensive line recorded three sacks and held Phillips in check for most of the night.
Next game: Fairfield Warde (2-4) at Greenwich (3-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in an FCIAC interdivisional game.
