3 keys to Fairfield Warde football
Warde 43, Bassick 20 (Nov. 15)
Special teams success: Warde's punt and kickoff return teams set up the Mustangs' offense with short fields. The beneficial field position, coach Duncan DellaVolpe said, helped lead to scores early against Bassick (2-8). "Getting up on an opponent is key for us to push on for a win," he said.
Offensive execution: It was much improved from the previous week's loss to powerful St. Joseph. Warde quarterback Brandon Bisack was 7-for-11 for 111 yards with three TD passes. The Mustangs received rushing touchdowns from TJ Gallagher, Joreb Maxime and Julius Langs-Jones.
Containment of dangerous player: All-everything Vachon Fowler, Bassick's No. 1 weapon, inflicted minimal damage. Captain Colin McKeown, a tackle, Ahmed Hourani (nose guard), Martin Ferraro (end) and Wade Petro (inside linebacker) "did a great job" containing Bassick's speed, DellaVolpe said.
Next game: Fairfield Warde (3-7) at Ludlowe (6-4) on Thursday at 10 a.m. in an FCIAC interdivisional game on Thanksgiving.
