3 keys to Notre Dame-Fairfield football
Bethel 43, Notre Dame 28 (Nov. 15)
Gap in roster size: Bethel (8-2) had more players than the Lancers, who used the 24 able to play. "They were just a big, strong, physical team," Notre Dame coach Ted Boynton said. "Injuries played a factor." Marcus Fulton, who scored two of the Lancers' touchdowns, was the only senior available. Notre Dame has problems stopping Bethel's option offense.
Effective second half: Notre Dame played well in the second half after Bethel had opened a wide cushion by halftime. In a battle of each team's younger players, the Lancers scored four touchdowns in the last two quarters. Fulton scored on a counter running play and scooped a fumble and returned it more than 40 yards into the end zone. Sophomore Bill Kelly had a kickoff return for a TD.
Positive signs: "Our blocking and tackling were better in the second half," Boynton said. "We were a lot more confident." With 24 player returning next season, and the influx of some more players, Notre Dame is expecting a vast improvement for 2014.
Next game: Cancelled -- Immaculate (0-11) at Notre Dame-Fairfield (1-10), Nov. 28, at 10:30 a.m., SWC Patriot Division game. The Lancers have won this game by forfeit 1-0. Immaculate was forced to forfeit the remainder of its game after a 43-20 loss to Crosby on Oct. 18 because of too few players to field a team.
