Colandro rescues Stamford in OT to beat Fairfield Warde 2-1
Although it was out shot for much of the night, the Stamford High School field hockey team saved its best for last.
Black Knights' senior Lindsey Colandro's goal at 1:23 of overtime boosted Stamford over Fairfield Warde, 2-1 on Monday night at Tetreau/Davis Field.
"It was kind of a big game," Stamford coach Kerry Leonard said. "We stressed to the kids that this was a playoff mentality. So it was huge to get that win."
Emily Allen scored Warde's lone goal on a first-half penalty stroke. The Mustangs earned a point in their final league game before Saturday's FCIAC quarterfinals. The Mustangs will likely be the league tournament's No. 6.
"We knew it would be close," Warde coach Jodie Shannon said. "I think the pressure of this may have got to them. We knew this would be a big game." Though the Mustangs out-possessed the Black Knights and outshot Stamford 8-2 in the second half, the Black Knights defense and Sanchez -- who stopped six shots in one second-half flurry -- kept Warde from scoring in the final 59:40.
"(Sanchez) is a great goalkeeper and she displayed that tonight," Leonard said. "She definitely played one of her better games all season. I was really impressed with the way she played."
"They had so many bodies and we just couldn't get it through the wall of them," Shannon added.
Stamford scored on its lone overtime shot. Mills possessed the ball into the circle, drawing two Warde defenders. The senior snuck a pass through the Mustangs defense right to Colandro, who buried the ball past Warde goalie Katy Stepsis.
"It was really exciting," Colandro said. "I just finished it off."
Warde earned a stroke and Allen beat Sanchez to her left, putting the Mustangs ahead 1-0 just 1:48 in.
But just 2:10 later, Kelly Niesen tied the score when she re-directed Mills' pass, beating Stepsis.
"I think that was big for our kids to answer back," Leonard said, "to make sure we kept the game close."
