The Fairfield Junior League softball team is firing on all cylinders.

Behind standout pitcher Sam Platz, Fairfield rolled to an 8-3 win over Greenwich, claiming the Section 1 title on Monday in Bristol.

Platz allowed three runs in seven innings, the only scoring she allowed in 14 innings during the tournament.. Alice Nelson was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Gabriella Natoli scored two runs.

"(Nelson) has been killing the ball," Fairfield manager Casey Elliott said.

Fairfield advances to the best-of-three state championship in West Haven for the first time ever. Fairfield will play either Mystic or Killingly-- the Section 2 championship will be decided Wednesday-- in game one on Saturday.

"We have a pretty good offense," Elliott said. "But we'll see how it matches up in state finals."

Fairfield outscored its sectional opponents 55-8 in its four games, including a 17-0 win over Greenwich in its' first round robin contest, a result that gave Elliott said "gave Fairfield confidence" leading up to the rematch.

Fairfield built a 8-1, fourth inning lead, thanks in part to Platz. The pitcher helped her own cause, driving in three runs, with two hits.

Platz then allowed two runs in the fourth, but held Greenwich off the board after that.

"She throws really hard," Elliott said of Platz. "It's tough for teams to score that many runs against her."
