For one period, Michael Collins and the Darien boys ice hockey team were able to keep Fairfield Prep's offense at bay.

But in the final 30 minutes, the Blue Wave were no match for David White and the high-powered Jesuits.

White recorded a hat trick, leading the state's No. 1 team to a 6-0 win over third-ranked Darien at Darien Ice Rink Wednesday night.

"It's a big win to come down to Darien, in their barn," White said. "They were really psyched to play us ... it's really big for us."

Junior forward Dean Lockery scored twice, Matt McKinney netted a goal, and Matt Wikman and Connor Henry each had two assists, as the Jesuits improved to 15-0.

"The win was well-earned," Prep assistant coach Rudy Mauritz said. "I'm really proud of that effort tonight."

Chris Gutierrez also stopped 12 shots, pitching his second shutout this season. Gutierrez's top stop came when he snatched Dana Wensberg's third-period snap-shot with his glove.

"Gutierrez came up big in some key spots," Mauritz said. "He showed an intensity and a focus that he hasn't shown this year."

The Blue Wave had their 11-game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 13-2-2.

"They're undefeated, and No. 1 in the state for a reason, and we found that out tonight," Darien coach Chris Gerwig said. "It's a great learning tool for us going forward."

Collins made 12 of his 31 saves in a scoreless first period. The senior goaltender was tested from the get-go, stopping Nick Bargiello just 28 seconds into the game.

Collins made his best stop on Wikman late in the frame, kicking out his left leg to stop a low shot at the side of the net.

"I thought he was outstanding," Gerwig said of Collins. "I think Mike had his `A' game the whole game."

But the Blue Wave took their first penalty 41 seconds into the second, and White made Darien pay. Sean Henry's point shot was blocked by Darien's defense, but the puck fell on White's stick and the senior found a vacant net, putting Prep up 1-0 just 56 seconds into the second.

"Sometimes that's all you need," Gerwig said. "They never looked back after that goal."

"Sean took a great hard shot, and I got a lucky bounce," White said.

White dug for a loose puck in the crease six minutes later, beating Collins and lifting Prep's edge to two. He capped the hat trick at 8:35, making it 3-0.

Darien -- which had averaged almost seven goals per game in its lengthy unbeaten streak -- was limited to just three shots on goal through the first two periods.

"Our defense hasn't gotten the credit it deserves," White said. "They play hard every night, and they keep a lot of shots out of the way."

Lockery and McKinney each scored goals in the third period's first five minutes. Lockery flicked a rebound over Collins' shoulder at 2:05, and McKinney dug out a rebound before beating Collins, making it 5-0 at 4:54.

"Those were just grind-it-out hockey goals," Mauritz said. "It was great that we were able to show that we could do that tonight -- that we could grind it out, get some rebound goals and keep the pressure on.";
