Fairfield draws Wagner in NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament
The day after winning a second straight MAAC tournament title, the Fairfield women’s lacrosse team was matched up with Northeast Conference tournament champion Wagner in the NCAA Division I tournament.
Fairfield will host the play-in game on Tuesday with the winner traveling to No. 7 national seed Princeton.
This will be Fairfield’s fourth NCAA tournament appearance as the Stags lost to Penn 10-8 in 2009, Princeton 18-8 in 2015 and Loyola 18-2 in 2018.
Brooke Gallagher leads Fairfield (15-3) with 42 goals and 32 assists while Meaghan Graham, Taylor Mitchell, Kathleen Hulseman, Kelly Horning and Jillian Winwood are other 20-goal scorers. Horning leads the team with 47 ground balls, Maggie Reynolds has 42. Madison’s Erin Mammele leads the Stags with 47 draw controls and Olivia Conquest has 15 wins and 169 saves.
The Stags lead all Division I women’s teams with seven one-goal wins and are 7-0 in games decided by one goal including Saturday’s overtime win over Siena in the MAAC title game.
Fairfield is in the same half of the bracket as No. 2 seed Boston College, a team featuring senior Elizabeth Miller of New Canaan on defense, senior midfielder Taylor Walker of Glastonbury and freshman midfielder Paisley Eagan of Wilton.
Wesleyan earned an at-large bid and a first-round bye in the Division III field.
The Cardinals will host the winner of Saturday’s Mary Washington/Westfield State game on Sunday.
Wesleyan is making its third consecutive appearance. The Cardinals defeated Messiah 13-10 and Rhodes 20-11 in 2018 to advance to the regional semifinals.
Abby Manning leads Wesleyan with 58 goals, 65 points and 70 draw controls, Abigail Horst has 43 goals and 61 draw controls. Allegra Grant is in the top 15 among Division III goalies with a 7.85 goals against average.
