U12 teams lead play
The Greenwich United U12 Gunners Premier soccer team (players combined from OGRCC and GSA soccer programs) played in two winter indoor tournaments recently, winning the title at Rockland Community College and taking second at Armonk Indoor Arena.
The group was split into two teams of 9 players (Gunners Red and Gunners White) for both tournaments and competed with premier teams from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut (Manhattan SC, Ramapo Tornadoes SC, New York SC, CFC Samba to name a few).
Both tournaments interestingly had the two Greenwich teams play each other as the last game and this game determined the winner of both tournaments.
At Rockland, the Gunners Red team needed a tie versus Gunners White to win the tournament and late into the game Red scored and took the 1-1 tie for a tournament victory.
At Armonk the reverse was true, after wins against CFC Samba and New York SC the White team only needed a draw against Red who held a win and tie against the same opponents. In the final 40-minute final game, Gunners Red held a 3-1 halftime lead but White turned the contest around with four answered goals to win 5-3.
The Gunners return to tournament play Feb. 3 at Rockland Community College and then start the season in early March with a tournament on Randall's Island at the Manhattan SC Premier tournament.
The Gunners currently are third in the state rankings and are ranked 28 in Region 1 (for all soccer teams in the 13 north-eastern states from Maine to Virginia) and are coached by Kurt Putnam the current Greenwich High School boys head coach and Athletic Director at Whitby School.
The six-week program for children in Kindergarten will run from 3:45-4:30 p.m. First and second graders will meet from 4:30-5:15 p.m., and third and fourth graders will meet 5:15- 6 p.m. The cost for the program is $100.
