Holiday tournament schedules
Most boys and girls basketball teams in town will be involved in holiday season tournaments during the school break, with three tourneys scheduled to take place in Fairfield.
On Thursday, at Fairfield University's Alumni Hall, was the scheduled start of the Fairfield Prep Christmas Tournament in boys basketball among the four varsity teams from Fairfield. Notre Dame-Fairfield (0-2) and Fairfield Ludlowe (1-1) kicked it off at 6 p.m. in the opening game, with the host Jesuits (2-0) playing Fairfield Warde (0-2) at 8 p.m. (Because the games ended too late to be included in this edition, a report of Thursday's games will be online at www.fairfieldcitizenonline.com.) The championship and consolation rounds are scheduled for Saturday at 6 and 8 p.m.
On Friday, at Fairfield Ludlowe, is the annual Todd Burger Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament in which Fairfield's two undefeated girls team have an opportunity to meet each other in the finals on Monday. In the opening round, Warde (4-0) will play Brien McMahon of Norwalk (0-3) at 4:15 p.m., followed by host Ludlowe (4-0) playing Brookfield (0-3) at 6 p.m. The consolation game is set for Monday at 4:15 p.m. in the Falcons' gym with the final scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
Across town on Friday, at the Sister Marion Rielly Auditorium at Notre Dame-Fairfield, the Notre Dame Appalachian Christmas Tournament in girls basketball will tap off at 6 p.m. with St. Joseph of Trumbull (1-3) playing St. John the Baptist of West Islip, Long Island, N.Y. At 7:30 p.m. or so, the Lancers (0-2) will host Thomaston (3-0) of the Berkshire League. Thomaston was the CIAC Class S runners-up in March; the Lancers were finalists in Class M. The final and third-place games will be Monday at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
The only ice hockey team in a tournament is Fairfield Prep (1-1-0) in the Mount St. Charles Academy Holiday Face-Off Tournament, featuring eight schools and three rounds, in Woonsocket, R.I. The tournament began on Thursday and will end at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Prep was scheduled to play Bishop Hendricken, of Warwick, R.I., on Thursday at 2 p.m.
