Fairfield Public Schools named Glenn Mackno, who retired as Roger Ludlowe Middle School principal in June, as the interim athletic director at Fairfield Warde High School on Friday afternoon. Ann Leffert, director of human resources for the school district, said he will begin in an official capacity there next week.

For the past couple of weeks, Leffert said, Mackno has been working with Chris Manfredonia, the Warde athletic director who was hired for the same job by Darien Public Schools last month. Manfredonia begins his new job on Oct. 21.

"We'll begin a search for a full-time athletic director in the spring," Leffert said. The target date for the next athletic director to begin his or her new job with the Mustangs' team would be July 1, she said.

"He has been getting up to speed. He has a strong background in athletics. We believe he'll do a great job," Leffert said.

Mackno spent 34 years working in Fairfield schools. He was recognized as the "outstanding middle school administrator" for 2013 by the Connecticut Parent-Teacher-Student Association at its awards banquet in May.

Mackno is a Fairfield native, and attended schools in town. Mackno was a physical education teacher at Stratfield and Dwight elementary schools for two years after graduating from Southern Connecticut State University in 1979. He coached volleyball at both schools schools.

Mackno moved to Andrew Warde High School where he taught physical education and health as well as coaching boys basketball and girls volleyball for six years. He taught at Jennings Elementary School for a year. In 1998, he was named assistant principal at Roger Ludlowe Middle School, then became principal there the next year.
