Ridgefield's Hopper, Staples' Debalsi win New England cross country titles
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The FCIAC dominated the New England cross country championships Saturday at Derryfield Park.
Ridgefield's Trevor Hopper (15:08), the FCIAC champion and Class LL and State Open runner-up, and Darien's Alex Ostberg (15:11) finished first and second, respectively, in the boys race while Staples' Hannah Debalsi (17:15) and Westhill's Claire Howlett (17:39) were first and second, respectively, in the girls race.
Ridgefield, the FCIAC and Class LL champion, finished second as a team in the boys race with 102 points, behind edged out by La Salle Academy of Rhode Island, which had 99. Darien finished fourth (168), Danbury seventh (241), Staples 10th (326) and New Milford 19th (490) in the 30-team field.
Fairfield Prep's Christian Alvarado, the SCC, Class LL and State Open champion, was the only other regional runner among the top 10, taking fourth (15:16).
In the girls race, Staples was the top regional finisher as a team, taking eighth place with 300 points. Coe-Brown Academy of New Hampshire was first with 78 points. Ridgefield was the only other regional competitor in the 30-team field and finished 14th (382).
