Kaly Gonski completed her hat-trick in overtime Wednesday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport to lead Trumbull past the Fairfield co-op girls ice hockey team 4-3. The third period began with the co-op team of players from Fairfield Warde and Fairfield Ludlowe leading by 2-1 before Fairfield opened a 3-1 lead.
Gonski scored a power play goal with 3:32 remaining in the game to cut the Eagles' deficit to 3-2. Gonski set up Lexi Brown for the equalizing goal with 50.9 seconds left to make it 3-3. In overtime, Brown assisted on Gonski's deciding goal after 3:41 had elapsed.
Trumbull improved to 6-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the FCIAC. Fairfield's records dropped to 2-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference.
Lucie Colllimore opened the scoring for Fairfield at 2:21 of the first period by converting a pass from her sister, Anna. Gonski got her first goal 89 seconds later, knotting the score at 1-1. Paige Reynolds converted a pass from Gabby Bochenczyk 69 seconds after Gonski's equalizer, giving Fairfield a 2-1 lead.
"That's probably Kaly's fourth hat-trick of the season," said Trumbull coach Paula Dady.
"We got a little undisciplined there at the end, and they cashed in," said Fairfield coach Paul Kelly. "You could feel it coming. We did not play it simple, and it hurt us. We did not get it deep. We were in control, except that a game is 45 minutes, and we played for 41 minutes. They had a couple of penalties at the end. The momentum shifted," Kelly said.
The schedule gets tougher for Fairfield. Defending state champion New Canaan is at Wonderland of Ice on Friday at 4:40 p.m., then Fairfield visits FCIAC front-running Darien at the Darien Ice Rink at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
