All the pieces were in place for the Fairfield Ludlowe boys basketball team to pull off the Class L state tournament's biggest first-round upset.

But in the end, the Falcons ran out of time.

Fourth-seeded Wilbur Cross built an 18-point second-half lead and held off No. 29 Fairfield Ludlowe 44-35 on Tuesday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Chan Williams-Bey led the Governors with 12 points and six rebounds, despite shooting 2-for-10 from the foul line. As a team, Wilbur Cross shot just 7-for-21 from the line.

"We're not happy with this one," Wilbur Cross coach Kevin Walton said. "We didn't match their intensity and we're lucky to come out of here with a win."

The Governors will host 13th-seeded Branford in Thursday's Class L second round.

"Survive and advance," Walton said.

Patrick Gutierrez led Ludlowe with 12 points. Ludlowe finishes its season 9-12 for the third straight year.

"We've allowed an average of 45 points per game this year," Ludlowe coach Brian Silvestro said. "I didn't expect to do this tonight ... my kids never cease to surprise me."

The Falcons shot 12-for-36 (33 percent) from the field and scored only two second-quarter points. Ludlowe managed just one field goal over an eight-minute stretch, and the Governors built a 32-14 lead midway through the third.

But, keyed by Gutierrez, the Falcons crept back into it. Gutierrez scored 10 of his points on a personal 10-0 run, which cut Cross' lead to just 32-24 at 7:13 of the fourth.

Wilbur Cross' porous free throw shooting kept Ludlowe in the game -- the Governors made just 1 of their first 10 free throws -- as did seven second-half turnovers. Ludlowe got as close as seven, 36-29, with 2:30 to play.

"I think if we hit our free throws, we're not having this conversation," Walton said. "We didn't finish possessions."

The Governors did find a way to hit foul shots down the stretch, sinking 5-of-9 fourth-quarter free throws. Wilbur Cross also outrebounded Ludlowe 27-19.

"It was a terrible matchup for us size-wise," Silvestro said. "If we were a little bit closer, we could've had it. But we didn't have the magic.";
