High school athletes of the week: May 9

GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Madison Lindsey, Kingwood - The sophomore Baylor pledge nabbed two complete-game wins against Cedar Ridge with a combined 28 strikeouts in 17 innings. Kingwood is in the regional quarterfinals against Austin Bowie.

What Kingwood coach Lauren Hendrix said: "She kept them off balance. She was huge. She just has a lot of heart and determination and she's one of the hardest working kids that I've seen. She really gutted it out and came through for us."

Other nominees

Ashlyn Wade, Deer Park – Was 5-for-9 with two triples, a home run and 11 RBIs in two games against Travis in the area playoffs.

Rachel Hertenberger, Alvin – Posted a combined 19 strikeouts with one earned run in 18 innings in two wins against Dulles in the area round.

Sarah Cedillo, Atascocita – Was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs in Atascocita's 13-3 area playoff win over Austin Westlake.

BOYS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Brett Williams, La Porte – The junior pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over No. 9 Alvin in the bi-district round, allowing three walks with two strikeouts.

What coach Ricky Torres said: "Brett Williams is a valiant competitor in the classroom and on the field, he displays honor, integrity and pride. Brett is a true bulldog on the mound."

OTHER NOMINEES

Jaxon Williams, Terry – Pitched a complete-game shutout with 14 strikeouts in a Game 2 win over Ridge Point in the bi-district playoffs. Also hit a grand slam and a two-run home run in Game 3.

Mitchell Black, Strake Jesuit – Threw a perfect game in five innings for an 11-0 win to clinch the bi-district playoff series over Milby.

Zach Zubia, Strake Jesuit – Was 4-for-4 with two home runs, five runs, four RBIs and two walks in two bi-district playoff wins over Milby.
